Nestled in the heart of Kirkwall, Orkney’s vibrant capital, is our charming
2-bedroom Earl Thorfinn cottage
Earl Thorfinn Cottage offers an ideal balance of convenience and tranquillity. Just a 5-minute stroll from the centre of Kirkwall—Orkney’s largest town—the cottage sits in a quiet little area with the added benefit of free parking. Inside, you’ll find a comfortable double bedroom, a twin bedroom, a new modern kitchen, a welcoming living room, and a newly fitted shower room, making it a perfect retreat for up to four guests.
You’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to local food and drink. A variety of coffee shops, cafés, pubs, and restaurants are all within easy walking distance. Just a few minutes away, William Shearer’s general store offers a fantastic selection of whole foods, local produce, freshly baked Orkney bread and cakes, fresh-ground coffee, and high-quality local fish and meats.
Kirkwall is a wonderful base for exploring both nearby attractions and the wider Orkney Mainland. Historic gems such as St. Magnus Cathedral and Earl’s Palace are within walking distance, while Scapa Beach, Highland Park Distillery, and Scapa Distillery provide excellent options for scenic walks, picnics and whisky tours.
The cottage is also perfectly placed for day trips across the islands—discover the Neolithic wonders of the West Mainland, including Skara Brae, Masehowe, The Ring of Brodgar and The Standing Stones of Stenness, or explore the East Mainland’s Italian Chapel and the WWII Churchill Barriers.
For adventures farther afield, daily boat services from Kirkwall Harbour connect you to the outer isles—Westray, Papa Westray, Eday, Shapinsay, and more—each offering its own unique landscapes, wildlife, and charm.
